Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced “Ray-key”) is a soothing and effective form of energy healing subtly transmitted through the hands of the practitioner, evoking physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing with its miraculous healing power. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words – Rei which means “Divine” or Higher wisdom” and Ki which is “life force energy”. With its origin believed to date back to the early 20th century, during when, Mikao Usui carried out his spiritual teachings in Japan, Reiki is also referred to as Prana or Chi. This soothing yet powerful method of healing has been derived from the philosophy that there exists a universal energy supporting the body’s inherent self- healing abilities. It goes on to state that the reason for our existence is a life force flowing through us; thisforce is believed to flow across pathways referred to as nadis, meridians and chakras. It is also considered to make up the field of energy called the “aura” that is around us. Providing nourishment for the cells and organs of the body, this life force essentially supports their vital functions. The disruption of this flow of life force results in diminished function in the respective organs and cells.

What to Expect from a Reiki Treatment

You will be asked to lie down, fully clothed. All you have to do is simply relax and have an open mind. The Reiki practitioner will move his hands over the main energy centers of your body known as chakras. Areas such as shoulders, elbows, knees and toes may involve subtle touch but for the majority, the Reiki practitioner will keep a distance from your body by simply laying hands a few inches away. Everyone experiences the session differently. Some may experience a warm or tingling sensation while others go into a deep state of relaxation or feel nothing. In some cases, you may even fall asleep. It is not unusual for clients to feel the energy moving subtly in areas of tension or blocks. All these reactions are normal. Keep in mind that Reiki is not a substitute for conventional medicine but rather a complement.

Reiki is open to everyone and is a completely safe treatment. Pregnant women and children can also benefit from Reiki.
